Stop Worrying About Money: Trusting God with Your Finances
I don’t need to ask if you’ve ever worried about money because let’s face it—most of us have. Whether it’s the pressure of paying off a debt, sending a kid to college, or simply making ends meet, money and worry seem to go hand in hand. But here’s the good news: God doesn’t want you to stress over money.
Just like a loving parent provides for their children, if you know Jesus, God is your loving Father who wants to meet your needs. Let me share a personal story with you about how I learned to trust God with my finances in a very real and urgent way.
A Personal Financial Crisis
A few years ago, I faced a financial scare. As a contractor, I have to make quarterly tax payments. Unlike most people who have taxes automatically taken out of their paycheck, I have to save up the money and make the payments myself. But this time, I didn’t have the $6,000 I needed for my tax payment, and I had less than two weeks to come up with it.
The reason? Our third child was on the way, and we had just bought a bigger car to fit our growing family. On top of that, we were making monthly payments to a midwife. As you can imagine, money was tight. I began to worry, wondering how in the world I was going to come up with that $6,000. I had some income lined up for basic living expenses, but nothing extra.
Then, my wife and I prayed a “scary” prayer. We asked God to provide the $6,000 in less than two weeks. It seemed impossible, but we trusted that God would provide.
God's Lesson on Trusting Him
Before I tell you how the story ends, let’s dive into a powerful lesson from the Bible. In Matthew 16:5-12, Jesus warns His disciples to “beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” At first, the disciples didn’t get it. They thought Jesus was talking about bread—something physical. But Jesus quickly corrected them, reminding them of how He had miraculously provided bread for thousands before. His point was simple: don’t worry about the physical needs—God’s got that covered. Instead, focus on the spiritual and trust God to provide for everything else.
I realized that I was just like the disciples. I was so focused on my immediate financial problem that I forgot how God had provided for me time and time again. I had to shift my focus from my bank account to my faith in God.
God's Provision and Generosity
Here’s where things get amazing. The year before this financial scare, God had been teaching me about generosity. On three separate occasions, God asked me to give large financial gifts to others—two to people in need and one to a church. I struggled with each decision, wondering if I’d regret giving away that money. And then, a year later, I found myself needing $6,000.
As we prayed that “scary” prayer, I was tempted to regret my previous generosity. If only I hadn’t given that money away, I would’ve had enough to pay my taxes! But then God reminded me of His promises. I knew I had to trust Him.
The Miracle
One week into our two-week deadline, I finished a video project for a client. This project was supposed to pay enough to cover our bills for the month—nothing more, nothing less. But when I reached out to send the invoice, something incredible happened. The client responded by asking me to add $6,000 to the invoice—completely out of the blue. I was floored. Who does that? The answer: God does.
Psalm 34:10 says, “The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, but they who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing.” When we trust God and put our faith in Him, He provides for our every need—even when it seems impossible.
The Principle of Generosity
Jesus teaches us about the power of generosity in Luke 6:38: “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over.” When we give with the right heart, we can expect God to meet our needs. It’s a biblical principle that shifts the responsibility of provision from us to God.
When I learned to trust God as my provider, I no longer had to worry about money. God took that burden off my shoulders and placed it on His. And when God is your provider, you can rest in the assurance that He will meet your every need.
Conclusion: Let Go and Trust God
If you’re worrying about money today, remember Philippians 4:19: “My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” God can provide. God wants to provide. And God’s provision comes through Jesus Christ.
Trust God with your finances, and watch how He works miracles in your life. Let go of the worry, focus on His kingdom, and trust that He will meet your needs in His perfect timing.
