Speak Life, Not Death - Proverbs 18:21-24

Proverbs 18:21-24 reminds us of the power of our words and the impact they have on our lives and the lives of those around us. As Christians, we are called to speak life, encouragement, and blessings rather than words that bring harm or negativity. In this article, we will explore the wisdom found in Proverbs 18:21-24 and how we can apply it to our daily lives.

The Power of Words:

a. Life and Death: Proverbs 18:21 says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." Our words have the power to build up or tear down, to bring healing or hurt. They can shape our thoughts, emotions, and actions, as well as impact the lives of others.
b. Creative Power: God spoke the world into existence (Genesis 1), emphasizing the creative power of words. Like our Creator, we have the ability to speak life into situations, to speak truth and love, and to bring positive change.

Speaking Life:

a. Encouragement and Blessing: Proverbs 16:24 reminds us that "pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones." When we speak words of encouragement, affirmation, and blessings, we uplift others and bring joy and healing to their lives.
b. Wisdom and Guidance: Our words can also impart wisdom and guidance to those around us. Proverbs 15:23 says, "A word spoken in due season, how good it is!" By speaking words of wisdom and truth, we can help others navigate challenges and make wise decisions.

Avoiding Negative Speech:

a. Gossip and Slander: Proverbs 16:28 warns against gossip and slander, saying, "A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends." Engaging in negative speech not only harms others but also damages relationships and fosters a culture of division and mistrust.
b. Complaining and Criticism: Philippians 2:14 advises us to "do everything without grumbling or arguing." When we constantly complain and criticize, we focus on the negative aspects of life, hindering our own growth and discouraging those around us.

Choosing Wise Companionship:

a. Surrounding Ourselves with Wisdom: Proverbs 13:20 states, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." The people we surround ourselves with greatly influence our speech and actions. Choosing companions who speak life and wisdom can help us grow spiritually and cultivate a positive environment.
