God Doesn't Call the Qualified, He Qualifies the Called - 1 Corinthians 1:27
As Christians, we often find comfort in the assurance that God doesn't call the qualified, but rather He qualifies the called. This powerful message can be found in 1 Corinthians 1:27, which states, "But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong."
This verse reminds us that God's ways are not like our ways. In the eyes of the world, qualifications and credentials may hold significant value, but God's perspective is very different. He looks beyond our human limitations and sees the potential within us. He calls us to serve Him, not based on our own abilities or achievements, but based on His grace and purpose for our lives.
Throughout the Bible, we see numerous examples of God using ordinary individuals to accomplish extraordinary things. Moses, for instance, was chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, despite his initial reluctance and feeling of inadequacy. David, a young shepherd boy, was anointed as the future king of Israel, despite being overlooked by his own family. The twelve disciples, who were mostly uneducated fishermen, were called by Jesus to become His closest followers and spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth.
These examples teach us that God's calling is not limited by our qualifications or societal standards. He equips and empowers those whom He calls, regardless of their background, education, or social status. It is not our own strength or abilities that qualify us for God's work, but rather it is His transformative power working within us.
When we understand this truth, it can bring great comfort and courage to our hearts. We no longer need to rely solely on our own capabilities or fear that we are not enough. Instead, we can trust that God will provide us with the necessary skills, wisdom, and resources to fulfill the purpose He has for us.
This does not mean that we should disregard the importance of education, training, or personal growth. Rather, it reminds us that our qualifications alone are not what determine our ability to serve God effectively. We are called to be faithful and obedient, trusting that God will equip us for every task He sets before us.
My Testimony
When I first heard the phrase, “God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called,” I wasn’t sure how much it applied to my life. But over the years, as a single mother raising two daughters, I’ve come to see how deeply true it is. I’m here to share my story of how God worked through my weaknesses and unpreparedness to show me that His strength is made perfect in our shortcomings.
The Unexpected Call
It all started when I was at my lowest point. I felt overwhelmed by the responsibilities of parenting alone, working to make ends meet, and constantly wondering if I was enough. Like many of us, I had doubts about whether I could handle all that life threw my way. I wasn’t the “qualified” one. I didn’t feel strong enough, wise enough, or spiritual enough.
But one thing became clear to me—God doesn’t need us to be perfect before He calls us. In fact, He often calls us when we feel the least prepared.
I found comfort in 1 Corinthians 1:27, which says: “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” This verse resonated with me in ways I can hardly express. It was a reminder that God sees beyond our qualifications and chooses us based on His purpose, not our resume.
Learning to Trust God's Process
At first, I resisted. Like many of you might be doing now, I questioned, “Why me, Lord? Surely, there are others who are more equipped for this calling.” But over time, I realized that God was not asking me to be fully prepared. Instead, He wanted me to rely on Him and trust His process.
Maybe you’re feeling inadequate too. Perhaps God is nudging you toward something new—whether it's a new career, ministry, or personal challenge—but you don’t feel qualified. I want to encourage you today to let go of those doubts. God isn’t looking for perfection; He’s looking for willing hearts.
The Journey of Growth
Throughout my journey, God slowly but surely qualified me. He gave me strength where I had none. He provided wisdom in situations I had never encountered. He even brought people into my life who could guide and support me along the way.
If I had waited until I felt “ready,” I would still be waiting. The truth is, the journey itself qualifies us. Every trial, every lesson, every hardship we face helps us grow into the person God is calling us to be. It’s not about where we start; it’s about how God refines us through the process.
Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve battled fear and self-doubt. But I’ve learned that these feelings are a natural part of stepping out in faith. It’s okay to feel scared, but don’t let fear stop you from answering God’s call. He will provide everything you need along the way.
Just like Moses, who didn’t feel capable of leading the Israelites, or David, who was just a shepherd before becoming king, God often chooses the least expected. If you’re feeling like you’re not enough, remember this: He qualifies the called.
Trusting God’s Plan for Your Life
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is to trust in God’s plan, even when I can’t see the full picture. When God calls you to something, He equips you along the way. You may not feel prepared now, but as you walk in obedience, He will give you what you need.
1 Corinthians 1:27 is a powerful reminder that God can use anyone—even those who feel the most unqualified—to do great things for His kingdom. Don’t let your feelings of inadequacy hold you back from stepping into what God has for you. You don’t have to be perfect, just willing.
My Words to You
There were many moments when I doubted whether I could fulfill my responsibilities, both as a parent and as a servant of God. But I am here to tell you that God works through the weak, the broken, and the unqualified. He doesn’t wait for us to have everything figured out before He calls us. He qualifies us as we take each step in faith.
So today, I encourage you to embrace the call God has placed on your life, no matter how unqualified you may feel. He’s not asking for perfection; He’s asking for your heart. And trust me, He will provide everything you need along the way.
Declare this with me: “I am not defined by my qualifications or lack thereof. I am called by God, and He will equip me for every step of my journey.”
